You’ve waited to bird Cuba and now is the time. And you can bird with Cuba’s finest bi-lingual guide, Arturo Kirkconnell, the co-author of the Field Guide to Birds of Cuba.  Arturo will lead you to find the endemics which include the Bee Hummingbird, the world’s smallest bird, the beautiful Cuban Trogan, and the precious Cuban Tody, among others.

Travel to Viñales, considered to be the most beautiful part of the island, to start your trip. Karst mountains are the backdrop for stunning views and forests that harbor Cuban Grassquit, Cuban Solitaire, Olive-capped Warbler, and other endemics, hopefully Grundlach’s Hawk. Then on to Zapata Peninsula (aka Bay of Pigs), easily the best birding in Cuba, possibly the entire Caribbean! Over 270 species have been reported here and we’ll hope to see Fernandina’s Flicker, Pygmy-Owl and Bare-legged Owl, Cuban Nightjar, Bee Hummingbird, Cuban Parakeet, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, and the electric Blue-headed Quail Dove.  Then on to Najasa and La Belen reserve before heading to Cayo Coco for several days of birding and beautiful beaches.  We’ll look for Cuban Gnatcatcher, a race of Zapata Sparrow, and Oriente Warbler here, with luck, Bahamas Mockingbird.
*Our January tour differs in the sequence of places visited, and the first night that will be in the sustainable community and eco-tourism site of Las Terrazas.  The tour will end in Camagüey, in order to be well positioned for the extension to Sierra Maestra and Santiago de Cuba.  If you're not extending, we'll return you to Havana, or you can fly out of  Camagüey.
Your guide on the extension is biologist Maikel Cañizares Morera, a delightful and knowledgeable researcher.  Heading south-east, you will make your way to the Sierra Maestra National Park. There amidst mountain ridges and cloud forest, you will hike to the rebel headquarters of Fidel Castro and the revolutionary leaders of the 50's: Comandancia de la Plata.  Your basic accommodation is set in a sublime mountain/valley-scape surrounded by forest and rural farms. You will then proceed to the 'cultural capital' of Santiago de Cuba, where more Revolutionary History, museums and traditional music awaits. This city is known as the birthplace of the "Trova" musical style.  At the conclusion of this tour, you will be driven to Holguín for your flight home.
We highly recommend a few nights in Havana before or after your birding trip. We’re happy to help with hotels, music, food and more.
