Tranquilo Bay Eco Lodge

Concept: The Kimball and Viola families built Tranquilo Bay inside the rainforest overlooking the Caribbean and the beautiful Panamanian jungle. They are raising their families here and invite you to taste the tropical paradise that they call home. Their central location within the archipelago of Bocas del Toro permits exploration of some of the most biologically diverse areas within Central America. Bocas del Toro, Panama includes an archipelago of some 68 tropical islands which are excellent for beach combing, birding and exploring.  Around the many reefs and lagoons you may fish, snorkel, kayak, and surf.
Great for families and multi-generational vacations. Within a short time you will feel at home, knowing all the staff by name, and sharing a Balboa (beer) before dinner.

Note to Texas clients: this is a mixed family - Kimballs graduated from UT and Viola from TX A&M!

Location:  What a location!  Bastimentos Island in Bocas del Toro, Panama, reachable only by boat.

Accommodations:  Built around a tropical meadow, each of the six air-conditioned cabanas features a spacious tiled interior with French doors opening to a large, covered elevated porch area, with Adirondack chairs and hammocks. They are tastefully decorated with locally crafted furniture. The large bathrooms have a walk-in shower, and each cabana has its own water heater, so you will never run out!  Bedding is either one queen or two double beds. The cabins are spread well apart for privacy, and feature spacious views of the jungle or water.

Dining: Meals at Tranquilo Bay are taken family style, and quite often you'll dine with the owners and their families. Breakfast may include a continental buffet, your choice of eggs and one special breakfast entree each day. Lunch will be packed for those guests whose activities keep them away from the resort. For those remaining on site, a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches are available. Appetizers are provided during the cocktail hour preceding dinner. Dinners vary based upon the local ingredients available; however you should expect three or four delicious courses each night.

Activities:  Built for fishing, snorkeling, and nature tourism, Bocas has some fantastic birding and Tranquilo employs excellent guides. Do not overlook this area if you plan on birding vacation in Panama. We spent a few days there recently and were blown away by the number of species on property as well as close by.  We spent a full day boating one of the old banana company canal I remember standing in one spot watching 2 different species of Manakin displaying! You should spend one day on a boat trip along one of the canals attached to the mainland, a former banana boat (seriously) canal, absolutely packed with birds. We saw 5 species of kingfisher in a matter of hours!  A new observation tower is great for canopy-level birding. Hawk migration season (mid-October) is amazing, hawks everywhere!

Also, the quiet waters (thus the name!) make for easy kayaking right in front of the dock.
